ART-À-PORTER: A History of Freedom in Expression!
Curated by Marie-France Bégis, ART-À-PORTER presents unique pieces born from bursts of creativity and narrative expression by thirteen Québec artists. Drawing on their exceptional skills and expertise, they have created bodily adornments, wearable sculptures, and innovative and unusual pieces, transcending our conventional understanding of traditional jewelry. These creations, born from diverse craftsmanship, illustrate the variety of artistic practices at work today and the use of often unexpected materials in Québec workshops.
Here, the artists propose a new relationship with the body, one which is characteristic of jewelry that is part adornment-part sculpture, and the result of technological innovation. This exhibition examines the artistic processes and intentions behind these exceptional pieces, each entirely handcrafted. It explores the inventiveness, creative vitality, innovation, and craftsmanship of designers whose work is recognized both nationally and internationally. At the MUMAQ, jewelry breaks free from its conventional constraints and reshapes our understanding of “wearable art.”
